A 2023 study explored the significant stress cancer patients experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly due to restrictions that prevented informal caregivers or support persons from attending appointments and treatments. The research highlighted how these restrictions, combined with the shift to telehealth, led to increased social isolation and a loss of vital support networks, which are critical for cancer patients’ coping and survival. This resulted in overall dissatisfaction, especially during in-person appointments when they were alone. The study calls for healthcare systems to use technology to facilitate remote participation of support persons, ensuring patients’ emotional and informational needs are met.
Dr. Khasraw was a key member of this study and was interviewed for the article. He emphasized the compounded difficulties faced by cancer patients due to the pandemic, such as increased isolation and reduced support. He stated that future health policies and practices should focus on maintaining social connections, particularly through technological means, to mitigate the impact of any future global health emergencies. Lastly, he stressed the importance of planning for better integration of support systems in cancer care, ensuring that patients and their caregivers can stay connected even during times of crisis.
