Dr. Richard Scolyer, a world-renowned Australian pathologist and melanoma researcher, passed away on June 7 at the age of 59 after living nearly three years with glioblastoma, far exceeding the disease’s typical median survival. Throughout his career, Dr. Scolyer transformed melanoma research by advancing the understanding of its molecular and immune biology, improving diagnostic pathology, helping establish the Australian Melanoma Genome Project and Biospecimen Bank, and contributing to clinical advances that increased five-year survival rates for advanced melanoma from less than 5% to over 50%. After his own diagnosis in 2023, he became both physician and patient, publicly documenting his journey through an experimental immunotherapy-based treatment regimen that combined neoadjuvant immunotherapy, surgery, radiation, and a personalized cancer vaccine. His openness brought unprecedented awareness to glioblastoma and inspired continued efforts to translate immunotherapy strategies from melanoma to brain cancer.
Dr. Khasraw leads the US arm of the GIANT clinical trial, the very study evaluating the immunotherapy approach pioneered through Dr. Scolyer’s treatment. Dr. Khasraw has emphasized that Dr. Scolyer’s experience galvanized efforts to develop innovative therapies for glioblastoma, highlighting the need to challenge conventional treatment paradigms while honoring his legacy through continued research.
